Isolated/widely scattered severe thunderstorms formed across parts of
central Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon and evening... and hail of fairly
unusual size (for this part of the country at least) fell under several
cells. The largest reported hail size was baseball size (2.75") in Fulton
county during the evening. That same cell also produced other large hail
reports, well over the minimum severe criteria of .75". Another
thunderstorm cell produced large hail and wind damage (appears just
trees/lines down) in Juniata county. This storm held a core of about 75dbz
around 15K feet!! I missed looking at the Echo Tops and VIL data at that
particular time... although when I saw those products during the storm's
life they were around 43K feet and 45-50, respectively. Not extreme, but
those values may have been a bit higher just a short time ago when the cell
was even stronger.
Another severe cell in York county several hours earlier produced reports
of hail ranging from 1.25" to 2" in diameter. As always in these cases,
there probably were multiple occurrences of large hail that did not get
reported.
Currently, this Monday afternoon there has been several thunderstorm cells
popping up across central PA after 18Z. Thus far no severe weather
*reported*.... although Bedford county was warned earlier. Wet bulb zero
heights are higher today than yesterday though, and this has and will
prevent such large hail reports today in Central PA.
