Although there is currently a drought in south Louisiana, the heavy
rain in the Mississippi Valley is having its affects on the Louisiana
area.
High river shuts down spillway to ATVs

The Bonnet Carre Spillway is closed to all-terrain vehicles because
of high Mississippi River water coursing into the spillway.
River water has been seeping through the spillway's gates for 1½
weeks, making many areas in the spillway dangerous for recreational
vehicles, Army Corps of Engineers ranger Greg Malon said.
ATV areas 1 and 2 and the main road running through the spillway are
closed.
"Some areas become deeper than others and there may be fast water,"
Malon said. "If you go in there with ATVs you could get swept away."
Malon said the river, which was at 13 feet in New Orleans on Friday,
is rising. He expects the fishing, picnic areas and four-wheel-drive
truck area will need to be closed next week.
The Mississippi River is expected to crest June 4 at 16 feet at the
Carrollton gauge in New Orleans, a foot below flood stage.
