[STORMREPORTS] Extreme Wx change in NC Mtns.

Well, yes it's May and yes two days ago we had a high
of 79 and yes we have been as high as 85 so far this
month, but a sharp change in all of that continues.
Check out this forecast. Reminds me of an event last
year in April, but is not quite as strange as an event
on May 8, 1992. (explanation follows)
FREEZE WARNING OVERNIGHT
OVERNIGHT
MOSTLY CLEAR AND COOL. RECORD LOWS 31 TO 36. NORTH
WINDS
10 TO 15 MPH BECOMING LIGHT IN THE EARLY MORNING.
MONDAY
MOSTLY SUNNY IN THE MORNING...THEN BECOMING PARTLY
CLOUDY.
HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S. NORTH WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT
MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE RAIN SHOWERS. A CHANCE
OF SNOW SHOWERS ABOVE 4000 FEET. LOWS NEAR 40. NORTH
WINDS 10 TO 15
MPH.

April 12, 2001 - High at the Asheville Airport was 82
degrees as a cold front approached. After about 30
hours of intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms
in the area, where we picked up about .5" rain, the
gusty north wind brought the cold air in.
April 17, 2001 - Cold north winds of 30+mph continue
to blow for the third straight day as the high only
reached 51. As night fell, an upper level disturbance
crossed the area bringing upslope snow showers and .2"
of liquid equivalent frozen precip. Not sure of the
amount of snowfall on the ground at any given time due
to the high winds, but remember that the snow began at
about 42 degrees and lasted for several hours off and
on before ending and a low of 32 recorded.
Six days later on April 23, 2001 the high recorded was
80 degrees.

May 8, 1992 - A vigorous upper level low pressure
system stalled out over the Carolinas for 3 days
unloaded tremendous amounts of snow over the western
North Carolina mountains above 4000 feet. Mt. Pisgah
(elevation 5721 feet) recorded an incredible 60 inches
over the 3 day period, tying the all-time single storm
snowfall record for the state. Mt. Mitchell (elevation
6684 feet) was buried under 30 inches of very wet
snow. On the previous day, the Greenville-Spartanburg
Weather Service Office in Greer, South Carolina had
snow mixed with rain, making this the latest date and
the first time in May that snow had fallen at this
location.

I used to live in Hendersonville, NC just a few
minutes south of Asheville and their city slogan was
"The City of Four Seasons" because of the distinctive
difference in the seasons there. We locals always
seemed to think that is was because we could
experience the weather of all four seasons in one day!
