The Florida Keys finally got some much needed moisture--the first
significant amounts for the month of May. A system that developed in the
western part of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday made its way into the Florida
Keys and South Florida early Sunday morning.
The activity started in Key West about 1am with thunder and lightning. Heavy
rain moved through the area for about an hour. By 2:30am light rain was
falling and didn't let up until 10am. Round Two of the system hit Key West
about 3pm with more thunder and lightning and heavy rains. While localized
street flooding occured, no wind damage was reported. Thus far, this station
on the southern end of Key West has seen 1.63" of precipitation while the
National Weather Service Forecast Office at Key West was reporting a total
of more than two inches of precipitation in the 24 hour period.
The forecast calls for a near 100-percent chance of precipitation throughout
the evening, dropping to 60-percent chance early Monday and diminishing to a
20-percent chance for Monday afternoon and evening.
