Well about the time Steve wrote this I was on the way to Westmont Boro near
Johnstown, Cambria County for reported damage from a severe storm shortly
after 4 PM. The producer at WTAJ paged me about 4:20 while we were at my
mother's doing the Mother's Day thing. Several hundred large trees, both
pines as well as hardwoods uprooted or snapped off. Some of them were close
to two feet in diameter. Much of the damage was in residential sections of
Westmont, where about 4,000 people are still without power. Amazingly no
injuries, even tho there were trees down everywhere you looked in a 5-6
block area. According to the fire dept, there was some structural damage,
but most of what I saw was minor considering the amount of lumber that was
tossed around. Also surveyed some damage about a half mile from the
residential damage at the Sunnyhana Country Club where about 50 large trees
were either uprooted or snapped off, littering the fairways with not just
branches but entire tops... talk about rough.... A couple blocks of the
residential area looked like the cliche war zone, with more trees and limbs
down than left standing. Look for some digital pics and video grabs on the
www.stormnet.org website by sometime tomorrow evening....
