[STORMREPORTS] Signs Of Drought Relief in the Northeast

In March and April, much of the region received normal or above-normal
rainfall after a winter so dry it broke records. The good news is likely to
keep coming this month. Forecasters predict near-normal rainfall in May for
the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

The showers of the past eight weeks were enough to turn lawns green, raise
stream levels and even replenish some dry wells from Maine to South
Carolina. And if the trend of near-normal precipitation continues for the
next few months, many Easterners can avoid restrictions on water use or see
existing ones lifted.

Some already are:

* On Tuesday, officials in Castine, Maine, decided to allow residents to
wash cars and hose down their houses for the first time since August. To
play it safe, however, they kept a ban on watering lawns.

* On Wednesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker loosened restrictions on
28 of the state's 67 counties so that many residents can resume watering
lawns, filling pools and washing cars.

But water experts say it's too soon to celebrate the end of the drought...
