A violent windstorm ripped through a trailer park early Thursday, killing
two people and injuring more than a dozen others.
The storm — possibly a tornado — tore a two-block path through the park
near Centralia, about 70 miles east of St. Louis in southern Illinois,
public works director Don Copple said.
The worst of the storm hit about 2:30 a.m., knocking down power lines and
toppling trees, he said.
"It looks like a bomb went off," Copple said. "To me, it looks like a
tornado touched down for a short distance."
Two people were killed and about 15 others injured, he said, citing police
reports. No details were immediately available.
The National Weather Service in St. Louis could not immediately confirm if
a tornado hit, but a meteorologist was on the way to the area Thursday morning.
Another possible tornado hit southeastern Ohio on Wednesday evening,
destroying at least 10 homes. But only three people suffered minor
injuries, including two truckers whose rigs were blown over, authorities said.
"I knew I was going to be in for a ride," said trucker Michael Belsches,
41, who suffered cuts and bruises. "You could see it throwing trees and
brush off the ground. It was like blasting stuff."
People reported seeing two funnel clouds merge and touch down in the area,
about 80 miles southeast of Columbus near the West Virginia line.
