Severe weather causes some problems in region
By MICHELLE SOTTIAUX
MONDAY'S HEAVY RAINS AND HAIL RESULTED IN SOME FLOODING ON SEVERAL ROADWAYS.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain passed through the area Monday evening, causing several weather-related problems.
The storms blew into the Venango County region about 6:30 p.m., shortly after the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm and tornado watch for Venango County. Thunder continued to rumble in periodic spurts throughout the evening.
Brad Rehak of the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said the storms were formed on a Lake Erie shore when the cool air from the lake mixed with the warmer air in the region. The storms then moved south and into Venango and Clarion counties.
Rehak said several funnel clouds were spotted throughout Venango and Crawford counties between 6 and 8 p.m. None of the funnel clouds ever made it to the ground, so they could not be classified as tornadoes, he added.
Communities throughout Venango, Clarion and Crawford counties experienced thunder and lightning and a barrage of rain. Some areas even saw hail.
The National Weather Service said Venango County received 2 inches of rain in a two- to three-hour period during the storm, while some parts of southern Clarion County saw up to 21/2 inches of rain in the same period.
The downpours caused several roadways to overflow and flood.
An operator at Venango County 911 said a section of Allegheny Avenue in Oil City was flooded as were Keely, Lamberton and Patchel Run roads in Sugarcreek Borough. She added that five or six different roadways in the Cranberry area were overflowing with water.
Seneca volunteer firefighters were busy pumping flooded basements and cleaning up water logged roadways. The fire department had the southbound lane of Route 257 closed for a time due to the deep water lying on the roadway.
Other area fire departments were also busy tending to flooded basements and roadways and other problems throughout the evening. There were reports of basement floods throughout Clarion and Venango counties.
