Storm Report for Temple, Bell County, Texas
Located 60 miles north of Austin, Texas
For Tuesday, March 19, 2002
All Times CST
The first episode of severe weather of storm season occurred in Bell County
Tuesday night but the worst bypassed to our north. A Tornado Watch for Central
and South Central Texas was issued at 3:30 p.m. to be in effect until 9:00 p.m.
A line of thunderstorms approached the area from the west during the late
afternoon. The line of storms developed a bow echo about 120 miles to our west
and moved east. Tornado and severe thunderstorm warning were being issued for
the counties that these storms were passing through.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Bell County just before 7:00 p.m.
to be in effect until 7:45 p.m. Just as the storms began entering western Bell
County, the line seemed to change to a more northeast course and so only the
tail end of the storms passed through the county.
Gray Army Airfield on Fort Hood, which is on the western edge of the county,
reported a 102 mph wind gust to the NWS. Most other reports that I was able to
come across were all under 50 mph. There were scattered reports of hail, again
mostly in the western part of the county with the largest being about 3/4".
There were also scattered power outages and some minor traffic accidents that
were weather related. No injuries were reported. Total rain for the event was
approximately one-half inch.
