Anchorage was pounded by one of their biggest snowstorms of all time over
the weekend. 25.1 inches fell in one day!! This smashes the old 24-hour
snowfall record by nearly 10 inches. The old record was 15.6 inches, set on
December 29, 1955. Snowfall is usually not very heavy right in the city of
Anchorage because it is surrounded by very high mountains on almost all
sides. The mountains surrounding the city routinely get pummeled by
snowstorms, dumping several feet of snow, but it has never snowed so hard
in Anchorage for a day like it did Sunday. The west side of town was buried
by more than 3 feet!!
