A relatively short, but intense episode of lake effect snow occured over
much of Northeast Ohio. The band of LE snow entered Ashtabula County, OH
shortly after noon and proceeded to pivot south.
The heavy band hit the Cleveland/Akron Metro Area around rush hour. Snow
was falling at the rate of 2-3 inches an hour and snow removal crews could
not keep up with the intense snowfall. Visibility oscillated anywhere from
1/4 of a mile to near zero for about two hours.
Cars were sliding off of roads and blocking roadways creating a nightmare of
a commute home.
The heavy snow band weakened and was out of the Lakeshore counties by about
10:00pm
In my case, it took me three hours to get home!! I got caught in a low area
where all roads out were uphill. These roads were blocked by vehicles that
could not climb due to snow clogged roads.
The storm moved faster than earlier thought. That was good and bad in the
sense that the storm did not last long, but it caught road crews, who, via
local forecasts, anticipated a slower, later start to the snow.
Today, skies are partly to mostly sunny with temps 25-30 degrees. About 10
inches of snow fell in Chesterland, Ohio (where I live - middle of snowbelt
too).
