Winchester (nw) VA

A full report on the Jan 19 snow event. (Sorry, i don't call it a storm
unless it reaches 6".) The snow began to fall about 7am (per airport
obs) and lasted until 12noon, with the heaviest between 8am & 10:30am.
In that time frame, airport visibility was between 1/4 and 4 miles.

The first snow accumulated about 3.66"
The second wave fell between 5 and 10:30pm, with moderate snow and
occasional 2-4 mile visibility between 7 & 8pm. It accumulated up to
3/4" on previously cleared areas, to a total 4 to 4.5". [VA storm totals

The area was teased with threat of snow (or not... or rain) all week &
warned as early as late Thursday evening that it was likely. As a
result, many shopped Friday & stayed at home Saturday. Main roads were
slushy during the afternoon, but became snow covered in heavier snow in
the evening.

There were a few accidents, about the average number for a Saturday. A
few people were transported to the hospital, but none were said to be
hurt seriously. A woman traveling at 65mph slammed into a snow plow
(going a lot less) on I-81 about 10pm Sat. Her air bag deployed & she
was belted. She had only minor injuries, according to the scanner
traffic, from medics who took her to the hospital. Two children were
taken from the park to to the hospital from sledding accidents. Neither
accident sounded serious.

I made a photo album at Epson Photo Center.
http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u={at}03288&a=0075358&f==0 .The
home page for the free service is http://photo.epson.com/index.html .It
mirrors the now defunct Photopoint service, but i found it slower than
PP. (I only lost $10 and 1 keepsake photo at PP. Although i had 650
photos there, most were wx related and no longer current. Many others
lost much more money & keepsake photos.)

I have gathered newspaper stories from the Mid Atlantic area:

As of 6pm Monday, none of the VA NWS office had prepared a snow total
map for the event. I'll keep checking.

Also checked TWC for thier verson of snowfall total map. They ran one
most of Saturday night, but i waited until Sunday for an updated
version. I watched several times, and only saw it once (about 10:50pm)
did not have a tape ready. Even no such map on the website.

Sun peak wind gust was 28mph at 3:45am, and produced's the low wind
chill for the day, of 8º. Water content of Saturday's snow was .40".

=========Mon 1-21-02
With temps soaring to 50 at the airport, and into the upper 40s at my
location, combined with about 40% sunshine combined to rapidly melt the
snowfall.

After the am threat of ZR & IP had passed (w/o anything more than virga
here), skies cleared somewhat. This scene was about 3:30pm, as west
winds were increasing.

At the airport, sustained winds of 23mph and a PWG of 38mph was
recorded. My PWG was 28mph at 3:15pm. This morning's low was 27.5 at
2:10am. the high was 48.4º at 4pm.

Temperatures are forecast to be at to well above normal thru this week.
In fact long range forecasts suggest no more snow this month.

However, rain is forecast daily late Tuesday night thru Friday. And at
the onset early Wed, there might be some ZR or IP for a short while.
