Winchester (nw) VA
As the surge of Artic air oozes southeast, the Atlantic seaboard
"swelters" with temperatures 20 to 30º above seasonable normals. In my
hometown, we have been near or above 50 each afternoon since last
Tuesday. We have been in the 60s since Saturday.
In fact, low temperatures have been generally above freezing. We were
below 32º a few hours early Saturday & Sunday, but otherwise has not
been prolonged subfreezing since last Monday AM. That is when the last
of the snow cover was still around.
In a strange occurrence, early Sunday, the temp at Hot Springs (in the
western highlands north of Roanoke) and Winchester (nw corner) were the
warmest in the state.

My temperatures since Saturday:
Sat: L 25.5 H 59.7
Sun: L 30.3 H 68.8
Mon: L 36.7 H 67.4
On Sunday, low humidity was 16%, which helped temperatures to rise
almost 40º!
The high was 1º shy of a daily record Sunday, and 3.6º Monday.
Records were broken or tied elsewhere in VA Monday.
Blacksburg: 66 (old record of 65 from 1974)
Bluefield (WV, but near the VA border): tied the record from 1984 w/ 63.
Dulles Aprt (near Wash DC) tied the record from 1999 of 67.
Saasonable averages are about 40 now in Va, except near 47º at
Norfolk. Today was the first day that the temperature begins to rise
after the coldest part of winter.
Here are 24 hour low/high temps for VA ending 7am Monday; and 3pm obs
(about the time of high temp) for the lower mid Atlantic:

Pix 1: I checked for sprouting bulb flowers, and found 2 types. One my
mom & I were unsure of (it grows about 1 1/2' tall and has slender
leaves). The other are daffodils, & a few of those have come up, at the
southeast of the house.

Pix 2: When i was taking down the wash this afternoon, i saw this robin
perched near the top of a maple tree in my front yard. It was the first
robin i have seen since mid fall.

Pix 3: Only scattered cirrus in the sky since Saturday. The cirrus and
the near 70º warmth made Sunday a pretty day. A very pink sunset
contributed even more just before 6pm.

Pix 4: Living near the local airport & listening to the traffic on the
scanner, i occasionally hear "glider in tow" notice to other pilots
using the uncontrolled runway. I saw one still attached (to a prop
plane) a few weeks ago, but this is the first time i got to watch one
"in person" (for about 5 minutes).

These drought statements were issued by the VA NWS offices last Wed.

I have only measured 38% normal precip since Sept 1. Normal totals would
be 12.76", and the actual total has been 4.9".
