Parts of southeastern Europe remained in the grip of the worst winter
weather for decades on Sunday while in Poland thousands of soldiers were
put on alert to deal with flooding in case of a sudden thaw.
Snow was reported falling as far south as the island of Crete. And in
Italy, the Venice lagoon, crossed by armies of tourists to see the
celebrated glass blowing on the tiny island of Murano, froze over.
