Published Thursday 12/27/01 at 12:00 pm. The state experienced strong cold
air advection (CAA) yesterday and into the overnight hours this morning, in
the wake of a departing east coast surface low pressure system. During the
first day of a cold wave CAA is the norm with lot's of wind and clouds.
Onshore W-NW flow at the surface and 850 mb advected higher dewpoints and a
deck of stratocumulus ashore keeping the west central area of the peninsula
west of the ridge warmer overnight. A cirrostratus deck associated with the
175 mph jetstream overhead and ahead of the next weather system also passed
across the central and southern peninsula holding up temperatures. Tonight
would normally be the coldest night with radiational cooling but encroaching
clouds with the next storm system may hold minimum temperatures up.
