Hi weatherfolks,
first, I hope you all had nice and peaceful
holidays...
For our area, itīs the first time since 1986 that we
had so much snow during at least one of the holidays.
It all began on FRI,21/12 with the first storm system
moving in (as I wrote before) dropping much rain in
the lower parts (mainly below 300m)and some 10-15cm of
snow above it.
Western Germanys topography is very structured, with
the lowest parts along the dutch border (15-60m ASL)
and the highets areas south of my hometown (500-700m
ASL), so the differences especially when it comes to
snow moving in with airmasses from the NW (NOrth sea)
is significant.
Cologne only had rain or sleet most of the time with a
thin layer only on Dec,24th, while we had about
10-22cm all the time.
Dec,21st abd Dec,22nd were days with nearly continuous
moderate to heavy snowfall along with strong gusts
(50-70km/h) which caused by times near-blizzard
conditions in the higher elev.
traffic conditions were chaotic in parts of southern
GErmany, where a blizzard dropped about 20-40cm of
snow on Dec, 22nd and Dec, 24th.
DRivers were caught in their cars and had to wait up
to 15h for rescue!
Right now, a new system begins to make its way across
Germany, with another 5-10cm of snow turning into rain
tonight.
Tomorrow, a second system comes in with heavy rain and
up to gale force winds...
The last days of 2001 are all but boring :)
Regards,
Lars
