Unexpected high winds have hit Pennsylvania with little or no warning...
power is reported out in Johnstown PA due to downed trees and power
poles... here at WeatherMatrix HQ in State College PA we have
experienced a wind gust of 50mph, which is either the 3rd or 2nd
windiest night we have ever recorded here. There has been minor damage
to some of our observing equipment which has lost support pipes.
This is an interesting situation... the Johnstown TV WeatherMan
indicated that this was an elevation event... this is born out by the
fact that here at HQ we have had higher gusts than the airport... which
hasn't reported at all since 8pm... which was when the wind started...
and the local AWS station which reports a 34mph gust. We are at higher
elevation than both of those stations but generally are 10mph or so
below their gust speed.
Note: In the LSR reported below a 54mph gust was reported from the
NWS-CTP roof, which is downtown several stories up.
Better late than never, the local NWS has just issued a statement:

...A Wind Advisory is in effect until 1 am Saturday...
Sustained southwest winds of between 20 to 30 mph will occur
tonight as a strong cold front crosses the region.
Wind gusts will be in the range of 40 to 50 mph. The strongest winds
will occur between 10 PM and midnight across the central and
lower Susquehanna valley...from Selinsgrove and Danville south to
Harrisburg.
