Hi!
Over a week has gone when cyclone William raged in Finland (and other
Scandinavian countries plus Russia). It was no hurricane, the mean wind
speed was 31 m/s which is 2 m/s below hurricane limit. Of course, in gusts
the wind speed was much higher, possibly somewhere near 40 m/s.
Here in inland, 150 km from coast, the strongest gusts were 29,2 m/s
and mean wind speed 23 m/s. And that is a LOT here. Such winds
have been measured inland last time in 1959 !
Some households suffered from blackouts over a week, and thousands
of remote summer cottages are still without electricity. Perhaps some
500 000 households suffered from blackouts during the storm,
and tens of thousands were left without power for several days.
This has lead to stormy discussions in finnish media. A new law
is now under preparation, to force electric companies to take
more responsibilities of sharing the eleciricity to customers.
It's amazing that only one person died in this storm. I personally
saw several "close calls" during the gusts when trees fell to
roads.
The estimated damage William did, is several hundred million
finnish marks (1 USD = 6 FIM). Most of the damage is forest
damages.
If you want see photos of what William did, please visit my site

Click "Myrskykuvagalleria" and there "In english" and you
will find a link to William photos. Two interesting photos
can be found also from "Myrskyuutisia" - this link is in front page.
I've started to translate my pages to english, but it's still
under work. So please excuse me, if or when you will
find some finnish text between english texts...
Regards, Olli Haukkovaara, from far north
