Public Information Statement
1000 am EST Sat Nov 24 2001

...First rain in five weeks...

The first measurable rain since mid October has fallen in many
areas in southwestern Virginia. As of 7 am...Roanoke had reported
0.05 inches...and Lynchburg reported 0.02 inches. This is hardly
enough to have any effect on the drought conditions...but it is a
start. The last measurable rain in either Roanoke or Lynchburg was
on the 14th of October.

The rain has resulted from a shift in upper level wind flow from
northwesterly to southwesterly...allowing moisture to move up from
the Gulf of Mexico. This pattern...with the upper level trough
shifting from the east coast westward to the middle of the
country...looks like it will last at least for the next week...so
the chances for more rain soon are good.
