Western Washington is getting battered by torrential rains with flood
warnings out on several major rivers. At my recording location in the
Cascades approximately 35 miles east of Seattle over 5" of rain has fallen
in the last 24 hours. Just returning from a drive to see the current flood
stage status on several local rivers (Tolt, Snoqualmie, Raging) several
roads are already closed in low lying areas, several mudslides and sink
holes haved closed other roads, and rivers will soon exceed their banks in a
number of locations. This has been caused by a warm front with snow levels
at 7000 feet. Although rain had deminished for several hours, the barameter
has once again started to fall and the rain increase as an even more
powerful cold front coming late this evening brings additional heavy
rainfall and high winds to the region late this afternoon and tonight. The
highest winds will be in the mountain high passes with wind gusts already
being reported of 103 mph at White Pass (6000'), and 90 mph at Alpental Ski
area (5500') near Snoqualmie Pass.
