So far, Hurricane Michelle hasn't been anything to write home about...
at
least from my perspective.
The 1pm est conditions from nws eyw show winds from NE 26mph. At this
location--3 miles south of nws--winds are E 20/G 25mph. NWS reports
almost
1.5" precip. Same here. Light rain is falling. The buoy stations closest
to
Key West are: Sand Key... 7 miles South. Winds are NE 32kts/G36kts. Dry
Tortugas... 70 miles West reports ENE winds at 34kts/G40kts. Sombrero
Lighthouse near Marathon... 50 miles North of Key West reports ENE winds
at
37kts/G41kts. All stations report temps in the lower 70s and pressure
readings between 29.71 and 29.76.
High tide occurred about and hour and a half ago and so far... no major
flooding problems. I took a ride around the island about an hour ago and
witnessed no significant damage. What flooding I did see was in roadways
that normally flood during a heavy rain storm. The surf is still
pounding
away at the seawalls and on the beaches. More beach erosion is a given.
EYW radar indicates rain is lessening. My guess is once the eye passes
over
Cuba, things will pick up.
We are still under a hurricane warning. Most residents have not left the
island and are continuing with their daily business. Some businesses are
open. Of course, the Miami media is trying to find something bad in all
this
and there just isn't anything bad.
I'll keep you posted.
