Hello !
Yesterday i told first news about what Manfred did in Finland.
Here's some more and corrections:
The number of households suffering from power blackouts
seems to be much higher than i reported, it's at least few
hundred thousand or perhaps half a million households.
(Which is much in Finland, as we have here only about
5 million people.)
Most blackouts were relatively short, but some areas are
still out of electricity and people have been evacuated
from their homes. Farmers have serious troubles
with their cows, chickens and other animals.
Manfred is told to be the worst storm in Finland
since last 25 years.
At my web site's front page at http://www.myrsky.f2s.com/
you'll see a photo of this storm. Just click the thumbnail
to see it larger. Photo was taken by my fellow storm chaser
Jori Hämäläinen, in the shore of inland lake Näsijärvi
in Tampere, in southern Finland. Waves were about
2 metres high, which is much in inland lake.
Manfred did a lot of damage also in Baltic countries
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Several people got
killed in those countries.
Funny coincidence with Manfred was that on thursday,
when Manfred hit Finland, the Chairman of the World
Meteorological Organization and a guru of the synoptical
meteorology, Dr. MANFRED Kurz arrived Finland the very
same day !
Regards, Olli Haukkovaara
