The NWS _has NOT_ officially sent out a report officially classifying
Mon's tornados. However, tv meteorologists in conservations w/ the NWS
say it should be classified an F3. Since 1950, only 3 F3 and 2 F4
tornados were recorded in MD, none this late in the season.
Damage swath 4 blocks wide (supported by home video). About 30 houses
were damaged bad enough to be unlivable. Laurel HS lost classrooms. The
first fatalities occurred when 2 sisters left from a visit with their
father at the Univ. of MD left via car. The tornado picked the car up,
slammed into building, over an 8 story dorm, and into trees a quarter
mile away!!
A firefighter working in the cleanup at the U of MD also died from a
heart attack. Several commerical buildings, including a Home Depot had
major damage.
In VA, the Culpeper/ Fauquier Co tornado might be labeled an F4. One
unoccupied large 3 story house exploded (many witness reports) as the
tornado passed. Three injuries were reported, all in mobile homes when
the tornado hit.
