Punishing tornadoes ripped across the Washington region yesterday,
killing two students at the University of Maryland, and splintering
trees, overturning automobiles and tearing the roofs from stores and
houses from Culpeper County, Va., to Laurel.
About 50 people were reported injured in Prince George's County alone.
The deadly twisters, unusual here, appeared to be the most destructive
such storms to hit the region in about 75 years and caused damage across
an area that stretched for more than 70 miles.
