Once again proof that nothing in north central Missouri is normal.
This also has to the first time any skywarn group in Missouri has been
asked to storm and blimp spot.
so let's get to it.
At Arround 720pm, a nasty Sqaull line was moving through Kansas City, This
Squall Line caused a over 50mph wind gust to break a metlife blimp to break
free from it's moorings and set sail, more on this in a minute.
At 834pm, Thunderstorms started moving into the area. First to go was
Caldwell County, placed under a warning from 835pm to 915pm. Major Damage
was reported in Caldwell county, including an ambulance blown off the road,
and loss of power, nearly county-wide.
This line slowly Pushed East and Northeast, At 845pm, NWS EAX put Ray
County under a Warning, for damaging winds as well.
The Next county in our Area to be hit was Caroll County, at 916pm Ham
Station N0TWE reported 40mph winds at heavy rains 18miles north of
Carrollton, before contact was lost.
Next Up.. Grundy, Sullivan, Linn And Chartion Counties all went under
warnings quickly.
At 950pm the Storm blew over my location, Proudcing High Winds and Heavy
Rains, The WX station measured at 68mph peak gust, Followed by several
60-63mph gusts, and 45-50mph sustained winds.
Power was on and off several times, and power lines were downed all over
town along with tree limbs.
To my South in Livingtston county, two Stories were developing, First the
blimp downing, and secondly the Severe Weather... the ASOS KCDJ gusted to
54mph at 944pm. (remember that, it's important later.) only scattered Tree
limbs being knocked down were reported in Chillicothe. Winds of 70mph and
nickle sized hail were reported in Mooresville. In our skywarn areas
southeast corner Charation county was hit hard. with large Trees uprooted
and downed near Mike.
We trot a little north, and into Linn County, at Brookfield ham station
NW0B reported that winds of 65mph knocked down Trees all over town and blew
the roof off one home.
Now it get's Strange.
At 940, Ham Station N0KKV Pete, passed along a request, that we look out
for a blimp on the loose from Kansas City. after getting this information I
notified the Grundy and Livington county Sheriffs offices of the blimp. At
around 1015 the livingston county sheriff's office notified me that the
blimp had crashed 3 1/2E of Chillicothe. At this time I notified Dale,
WA0NKE and Burt AH6ES who had been dogging the blimp since it got free of
it's location. We also relayed through Ron, KB0TDA & Amiee KB0TXA both in
polo that we had found the blimp. and we were dispatching personal. This
information was sent back to KC and metlife personal and FAA personal left
KC en route to the location.
Dale, WA0NKE and Burt, AH6ES got to the location, which was 3.2miles east
of chillicothe at 1058pm.
they reported the blimp was deflated and it was on it's side on top of a
farm fuel truck (talk about lucky)
between 1015 and 1058 I spent Time relaying messages from KC and the FAA to
the Livingston county Sheriffs office. at 1120p, Alan, KC0CKX was
dispatched to the location to provide equipment to tie down what was left,
until metlife personal could arrive to haul it away.
However, God bless the media, and mean sheriffs, while as the officers
first on scene help in our information gathering, the sheriff himself
showed up shortly after media arrived, KCTV arrived at the location at
1156pm, and KMBC arrived at 1158pm, at 1202am the sheriff ordered our hams
out of the area because he felt there was too many people on-site. Before
the hams were asked to leave, we got the weather information at the time of
the crash from the home owners at the request of the NWS. the blimp
returned to earth around 950pm, in the middle of a heavy thunderstorm. the
homeowner told Burt, AH6ES that he had winds of 30-50mph and heavy rains.
Now, note, CDJ reported 54mph 6.5mi W of the crash site at 944pm :) at
1204am I contacted the FAA and asked them if they wanted the hams to remain
on scene until they arrived, the FAA advised us that there people would be
on scene within a few minutes, so we could stand down. so, i officially
closed the operations net at 1205am, after 4hours of operations for severe
weather and blimp operations.
tontine, everything worked as planned, by sharing information between
myself and the local agencies (and federal) and vice versa, we were able to
handle the situation carefully and insure it didn't get worse
my thanks goes out to..
