SUBJECT: Heavy Thunderstorms in FL Keys
A series of heavy thunderstorms began rolling through the
Florida Keys last night, 7/21, around 11pm EDT. One large
cell was situated north of the Lower Keys in the Gulf of
Mexico. Another was coming up the Florida Straits from Cuba.
Once the cells came together, we had a thunder and lightning
show lasting about an hour and a half. While rainfall
amounts were heavy in the area of the storms, most sections
of Key West received less than a quarter inch of precip. As
the night went on, though, precip totals increased from the
light to moderate showers. I recorded .68 from midnight to

the light to moderate showers. I recorded .68 from midnight to 7am EDT.
The
Keys have been drenched all day long as well. Since 7am EDT 7/22, I have
recorded .97 inches of precip and it's still raining. The NWS EYW office
has
issued several marine warning statements and there as an Urban Flood
Advisory issued this morning. There has been much localized street
flooding.
After several days of high 80s and low 90s, the mercury struggled to
reach
the upper 70s for today's maximum.
Regards,
Harry
