Rain, unseasonable coolness to continue through weekend

Rain that coated the region and much of Florida on Friday could be repeated
today as winds from the southwest move more moisture-laden tropical air over
the state. Just about every place in the Tampa Bay area got some rain Friday,
with some places in Pinellas and eastern Pasco counties receiving more than
an inch as lines of thunderstorms moved ashore. Rainfall for the rest of the
region was between one-fourth and one-half inch. The storms started overnight
in the Gulf of Mexico and were pushed inland by winds from the southwest.
They got a boost from an area of low pressure to the west and an upper-level
disturbance, said Steve Jerve, a meteorologist with WFLA, News Channel 8.
Today should have more of the same, with about a 70 percent chance of rain.
``It could be kind of a cloudy, wet day,'' Jerve said. The clouds should keep
temperatures lower than normal again today. At mid-afternoon Friday, the
temperature was only 76 degrees, far below the typical low 90s for the first
day of summer. Sunday, the chance of rain will drop to about 50 percent, and
temperatures should be a bit higher than today with more sunshine, Jerve
said. By the start of the week, winds are expected to shift and come from the
east, making afternoons the more likely time for rain. The rain pattern
Friday and over the weekend is not the normal one for Florida summers, which
typically have thunderstorms forming inland and moving toward the west coast
in the late afternoon and evening. The rain lasted longer Friday than
forecasters anticipated. ``We got a little more rain than we thought, but
who's complaining about that?'' Jerve said.
