[STORMREPORTS] Severe Thunderstorms, Skywarn, Communitions failures...

A major line of severe thunderstorms tore through northern Missouri downing
trees and power lines.

The Severe thunderstorms developed along a line from just northwest of St.
Joe. to southwest of Kansas city.. the first areas hit was the Kansas city
metro. the winds at IXD in southern Johnson county Kansas gusted to
nearly 60mph.. causing damage to the airport. winds in other parts of
Johnson county gusted between 40 and 60 miles per hour. lots of tree limbs
were knocked out. lightning, high winds and power outages knocked out all
but one Kansas city TV station.. KMBC (kudos guys) remained on the air
through out the storm. while WDAF-TV; KSHB; and KCTV went off air several
times.. KSMO-TV was also knocked off the air, and is still off the air as
of this writing.. (KC GUYS... any word on KSMO?). even getting through to
NWSFO EAX was hard.. several times power/phone outages caused me to lose
phone contact with EAX.

The storms then went severe in my area. the storms caused at least 65 mile
per hour winds in Bethany, MO; and one confirmed tornado in Bylthedale,
MO; near the Iowa line (this storm later produced a second tornado near
LWD.. reportedly crossing Interstate-35 just north of Lamoni.

The storms also caused widespread wind damage from Maysville through
Cameron. to Chillicothe and even into Trenton, (more on that in a minute)

Windows were blown out and parts of roofs were ripped off in southern and
southwestern Caldwell County, from an estimated 80-100mph winds.

Now to the fun stuff.. the Trenton and Chillicothe area. From my location
in Northwest Trenton the storm didn't look all that impressive.. some light
green tint to my northwest. and only a light grey sky to my south west. the
Rain started around 320pm. and shortly there after the winds picked up they
were only gusting to 32mph. then we took a lightning strike and lost the
station for a few minutes.. the station came back on just in time to catch
a 77mph wind gust (winds may have been as high as 80mph while the station
was resetting). several large trees near my location were toppled.. and one
fell on a house. luckily, to my knowledge no one was hurt. but with
70-80mph winds and zero visibility. it was rather scary.

Now a point I want to bring up at this point is, just how many backups is
enough backups. Our Local skywarn ground normally uses the Chillicothe,
Missouri Repeater to pass along skywarn reports to myself for phoning to
NWS KC. I've been Netcontroll for going on 6 years now, and upto last year
our repeater had never been off the air once, in the past year we've been
knocked out in two thunderstorms (yes, we are looking into a backup power
source). with the already mentioned phone problems (even the city of
trenton had some problems with the phone company master office losing power
twice). our backup systems were taxed out. without the Chillicothe
Repeater. we had to go to simplex systems. after going to simplex we had
the phone problems. other NCS's I'd like to hear your input on backup
means.. keep in mind that that we are too far from EAX for direct contact.

input on these storms welcome..

(ps. can someone buy me "VIPIR" saw it used on KMBC.. it rawks)
