Statement as of 4:50 am PDT on May 27, 2001
...Major Weather Changes Expected Over Next Three Days...
After four days of unseasonably warm weather...major changes are in store on
Monday and Tuesday following one more day of unseasonably warm weather
today. A cold front will approach the inland northwest this afternoon and
move into an unstable atmosphere...triggering showers and thunderstorms this
afternoon and tonight...especially over the Idaho Panhandle and over the far
eastern counties of Washington. Some of these thunderstorms could produce
brief heavy rain and hail approaching the size of dimes.
Following the passage of the cold front...cooler and drier conditions will
follow with temperatures on Monday about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than today.
Colder air will continue to invade the area on Monday night. As an upper
level disturbance moves across the inland northwest on Monday night...snow
showers can not be ruled out from Omak to Colville to Sandpoint. By sunrise
on Tuesday...temperatures will flirt with record lows in the 30s and lower
40s...and high temperatures on Tuesday will only reach the 50s and lower
60s. A stiff west to southwest wind will make it feel even colder. Compared
to today...residents and visitors to the inland northwest should be prepared
for temperatures falling 25 to 35 degrees by Tuesday with thunderstorms
tonight starting the transition.
