(May 6) - Showers and thunderstorms stretched from the northern Plains to the
Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.
The National Weather Service posted a tornado watch for parts of central
Texas, and central and eastern Oklahoma, with severe thunderstorm watches for
eastern Kansas and northern and western Missouri.
Rain fell during the morning along a band from North Dakota and northern
Minnesota through Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas,
Louisiana and eastern Texas.
Up to an inch of rain fell during the first half of the day in parts of
Missouri and the eastern Dakotas.
As the band of wet weather swung toward the east during the afternoon,
thunderstorms formed along the Mississippi Valley in sections of Iowa,
Illinois and Missouri.
A separate line of thunderstorms formed during the afternoon from southern
Iowa through northwestern Missouri and eastern sections of Kansas and
Oklahoma into Texas.
Ahead of the band of wet weather, a few thunderstorms formed during the
afternoon in eastern sections of Kentucky and Tennessee, and light showers
developed over the upper Great Lakes.
Sunday's temperatures around the Lower 48 states ranged from a morning low of
17 at Stanley, Idaho, to a midday reading of 88 at Waycross, Ga. The lowest
wind chill was 3 above zero at Buffalo, Wyoming.
