Winchester VA

A record cold Thursday morning for 3 stations in VA, but finally the
artic blast has left. From the co-op & AWOS reports, these stations had
snow on the ground at 8am Wed. Bayard WV 2.5", Keyser WV .1", Frostburg

the complete reports at

The record cold was tied at 2 stations & broke at a third: Dulles

Ronoake 28 (tie from 1936)

Here, despite a clear sky & calm wind over night, temperatures in town
stayed near freezing Thur am.

The low was 30.7º at 6:47am, the high was 62.2º. The PWG was 14mph
was at 3:43pm. The pollen count was 25, for trees.

A sunny sky till 10am, then a thick mantel of FW cumulus formed. Skies
were mostly cloudy 11am to 4pm, slowly clearing afterwards. The NWS
called for a mostly sunny sky.

Photo: at about 6:30pm, as clouds thin before sunset.

And this storm report was received from Hopewell VA [Richmond area] at
4pm Thur:

These tulips & the daffodil closes to the camera surived the 80 degree

not.

However, the fruit crop lives on. The local newspaper did not have a
story on the near disaster, so this is from the WINC radio station
website:

NEWS: Updated Thursday 04/19/01 2:00 pm
Despite subfreezing temperatures last night, the Winchester area's fruit
crop was spared. Horticulturist Ross Byers says there was some very
minimal damage done to peaches in low-lying areas but nothing that will
prevent a full crop from being harvested. He says apple trees escaped
the cold unharmed. [WINCFM]
