The USA Disaster Situation Report

I have, for well over a year, provided the USA Disaster Situation Report.

The Situation Report, as it is currently configured will be coming to end
shortly. I began the report as an experiment. As with many things, that I
do, I attempted to accomplish a number of objects.

First, I wanted to present what I thought was the best available public
information available for the subject. That it be public information is
important. Currently about 10% of the traffic at the Disaster Center site
is related to search engines seeking out copyright violations. All of the
information that we use at the Disaster Center is however, public
information. This is important, because the information that we do not
distribute is under the control of the very organized National news media.
Because we distribute agency reports directly, the public is allowed to see
our public agency's message as presented, directly to the public.

Secondly, I wanted to learn for myself what kind of information is available
and to understand the manner and process by which that information is
transmitted to the public.

The availability and quality of government information distributed to the
public, related to warning, risk assessment, methods and means of
distribution, the currency and accuracy of that information makes an
interesting topic of study.

Thirdly, I wanted to develop an understanding about the means whereby
technical understanding of risk can be communicated to those who by location
are proximate to the risk.

The larger question that I am trying to answer is how to establish complex
systems that can deliver relevant data to those who need it; which, of
course, is everyone, at some time. That work will go on. I am setting up a
number of alternative mailing lists. Information about the systems, that
will underly their use, will shortly be available.
