=> National Weather Service Day 3-10 U.S. Threats Valid Friday, April 06,
2001 -
Tuesday, April 17, 2001.
Summary of Forecasts & Threats
SYNOPSIS: A period of fairly typical unsettled to stormy springtime weather
across much of the
nation is expected to produce a variety of threats, as vigorous short waves
ratate through a mean
long wave trough in the West and move northeastward through the middle of
the country.
THREATS
Abnormally heavy snowpack and snow water content pose a spring flood threat
in parts of the
Upper Mississippi Valley and northern Great Plains, and in New England. The
possibility of heavy
rain on the snowpack Fri-Sat Apr 6-7 poses a more immediate risk of flooding
in the upper
Mississippi Valley.
Long-term drought continues over most of Florida with little additional
relief in sight, while periods of
rain are expected to bring further relief to long-term drought over the
southern Appalachian area.
Low mountain snowpack conditions that have developed over much of the West
are likely to
experience additional relief during the next two weeks.
There is a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms on Friday April 6 from
Texas to middle
Mississippi Valley and the lower Ohio Valley. Another round of thunderstorms
in much of the same
area is possible Wed-Thu Apr 11-12.
Heavy wet snow and strong winds are likely for parts of the northern and
central High Plains Fri Apr
06-Sat Apr 07. Another storm affecting much of the same area is possible
Tue-Wed Apr 10-11.
DETAILED SUMMARY
For Friday April 6 through Sunday April 8: A strong spring storm moving out
of the Rockes to the
upper Mississippi Valley is expected to bring heavy wet snow to the high
Plains, heavy rain and
posssible flooding to the upper Mississippi Valley, and strong thunderstorms
with possible severe
weather to parts of the South, middle Mississippi Valley, and lower Ohio
Valley.
For Monday April 9 through Tuesday Apr 17: General persistence of the
long-wave pattern sets the
stage for a second storm around the middle of next week that will be similar
to the first storm in its
path and effects.
