"The number of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes is down substantially
so far this season. The main reason is that a persistent northwesterly
flow of air through the central and eastern states has pretty much
eliminated any chance of real warm and humid air from flowing northward.
Without the fuel supplied by warmer air masses, severe thunderstorms are
less likely to occur. Through March 16 this season there were 49
tornadoes. The past three-year average for January, February and March
is 219."
