Just a bit after I posted last night, the intermittent snow changed to a
mixture of snow/sleet then plain sleet around midnight. Throughout the night
and early this morning scattered bouts of sleet (occasionally mixed with
freezign rain) have been occuring. Enough warm air aloft did retrogress
ashore from the Atlantic for this snow to sleet/rain mix transition. It (the
wintry mix) has accumulated to about 1/2" to an 1" almost everywhere besides
streets and any other treated surfaces. In some sense this storm is just
starting to really get it's act together, and this wintry slop we're getting
will change back to snow (and a heavier snow at that) as our winds begin to
shift to a more northerly direction. Here in NYC this is expected to occur by
this evening. The temps don't ahve to drop much for the change-over back to
snow, we've been sitting at around 32 since last night. Questions still
remain though on how much snow we will get. This is all dependant on where
the storm decides to track and where it makes it's forecast loop before
heading away. Right now the heaviest snow is expected to fall to our North
and North East, in Northern New Jersey, the Catskills of NY, and Northern
Connecticut into Mass. where 1 to 2 feet is forecast (possibly more in some
locales). Around a foot still expected here in the city by later tomorrow.
This Afternoon
A mixture of freezing rain...sleet...snow and plain rain. Windy. Temperatures
in the lower 30s. Northeast wind 25 to 30 mph...gusting to 40 mph.
Tonight
Mixed precipitation changing to snow...heavy at times. Windy. Low in the
upper 20s. North wind 20 to 25 mph and gusty. Chance of snow near 100
percent.
Tuesday
Snow. Total accumulation...8 to 14 inches. Windy. High in the mid 30s. Chance
of snow near 100 percent.
Tuesday Night
Cloudy with a chance of snow. Windy. Low in the lower 20s.
