Winchester VA

Sat 3-03
Like many in the mid Atlantic & northeast, i headed for the grocery
store [after i got off work]. I was expecting long lines & stripped
shelves. Although there was a run on: canned vegetables, bottled water,
& beer, the only item completely sold out was "fresh" green peppers &
green beans. Snowstorm essentials of milk, toilet paper, & bread were
stocked but showed signs of the rush.

My time in checkout line was under 10 minutes, with only 1 person ahead
of me. The clerk said the lines were into the aisles about 1pm. For the
record, i was only 1 day early for my weekly shopping trip.

It was cloudy Sat am, which broke to higher cirrus & broken alto stratus
about midday. That allowed moderate pm sun. Skies cleared even further
about sunset, then became cloudy again about 10:30pm.

The low was 35.7º at 3:30am, the high was 57.7º at 2:31pm. PWG of
13mph at 10:40am. Low windchill was 11:11pm.

I had to work again Sunday afternoon, but got to leave early. Not due to
wx, but because of the lackluster business. The newspaper carrier forgot
to leave a 2nd Sun paper, so i stopped at the grocery store to it pick
up. It was even slower there. Apparently, with a Sat forecast of
accumulating snow Sun, many chose to stay home.

The rain began about 3am, and after about 3pm, occasionally IP would mix
in. Nothing heavy or steady though. The rain totalled .34" before
changing to sleet & snow about 10:30pm, and to all snow about 11:30pm.

Sunday's high was 43.1º at 12:01am, the low was 33.3º at 11:32pm.
Daytime temps were about 38º, then fell about a degree a hour from 6pm
to 11pm. PWG was 13mph at 6:24pm. Low windchill was 20 at 11:15pm.

Mon 3-05
When i called the NWS about 3am to report a 1/2" of snow, they broke the
bad news to me. The storm is developing too far north to bring any more
snow after this am, & what falls will be light [1" max accumulation].

As a result the NWS dropped the 3 hour old Winter Storm Warning,
replaced it w/ a winter wx advisory. Snow pops remain moderate to high
thru Tue night, but QPF's are light.

Here is today's local wx story, written Sun evening, when heavy snow was
still in the forecast.

Road conditions remained generally wet, but overpasses & bridges became
slick about 1am. With highway depts on the standby, they were quickly
treated.

I started a Photopoint album, in anticipation of a major storm. The 1st
6 shots are in, all of the early start of was once thought to be a 2 day
snow storm. <sigh> Maybe Friday <g>
