In the shadow of the big storm predicited for this weekend, South Southwest Florida is still experiencing what we call "perfect weather." Presently it is 81 degrees F with sunny weather. There are clouds, but they are a puffy white adding to the pleasant scenery. We are desparately hoping that the 40 per cent chance of rain being predicted to occur late tonight and/or Sunday will actually occur. The fire index for Charlotte County is over 700 (extreme emergency conditions) with Lee, DeSoto, and Hendry counties just underneath that figure. What this means is that the slightest spark will definitely set off a blaze. Outdoor burning is banned at the moment. Unfortunately, the predicitons suggest that these drought conditions will not let up until about August. Rainy season begins in May, so you can see the outlook is rather bleak. It will take a tropical storm of some nature to change this cycle. All of our SSW florida fire departments are on emergency watch with cooperative agreements to assist beyond normal
boundry lines. The situation is also putting a strain on water levels and supplies. What saves Cape Coral is the fact that we are on a reverse osmosis system utilitzing dual water. Even so, we are on very tight restrictions with the rest of the area on even tighter ones. In my 38 years in Florida, we have not had these tight of restrictions for this amount of time until now. It is a crises situation that the rest of the country will be hearing about very shortly. Richard Macomber-Cape Coral (Lee County), Florida.
