Severe Weather Update - 3:26pm
There are currently tornado warnings for Blount, Choctaw, Cullman, Hale,
Perry, and Sumter counties. The bow echo indicates straight line winds and
the possibility of weaker tornadoes.
Moments ago, the storm hit the Birmingham area with strong wind gusts and
hail.
There were several reports of people without power, and the roof of Ed's Pet
World in Homewood was damaged. Woody Odom with the Jefferson County EMA said
there were reports of trees down and golf-ball sized hail.
"Wind gusts at Legion Field over 90mph, reports of debris in the air," said
Odom.
Reports from Pickens County indicated trees were knocked down and roads were
blocked in some places. There were reports of tornadoes, but no confirmation
of touchdown.
In Tuscaloosa County two trees fell on a home and blocked a nearby road. No
one was injured, but the owners had just purchased the house.
Alabama Power said as many as 40,000 were without power west of Birmingham.
