Hi Steve!

What you've experienced is called "Thundersnow". And yes, you can't have
thunder without lightning. My first experience with "thundersnow" was in
1983 here in the DC area on Feb 11th. I remember it quite vividly, as it
snowed to beat 60 that day, snowing my 2 roomates in at their jobs. I
listened to my "gut" instinct and stayed home that day. I talked to my
brother on the phone that day, as it was his birthday, and he rubbed it in
that it was around 70 degrees where he lived in Wilmington, NC and he was in
a t-shirt, and here I was knee-deep-plus in snow. I remember coming into
the house I lived in and just as my hand touched the doorknob, I saw a
bright pink flash behind me and heard a deafening crash of thunder and I
tell you--I was through that door in a flash!!! :-)

I have heard since that the NWS office, which was located in Camp Springs,
MD at the time, also just happened to observe this same phenomenom and was
able to record it (probably the same flash/crash that made me have to change
clothes!!). It's my understanding that thundersnows happened infrequently
before then, but it was the first time the NWS actually experienced it first
hand and was able to record it.

Welcome to the Thundersnow Club!! :-)
