ST. JOHN'S - When it comes to Canadian winters, people in Newfoundland
have weathered more than their share of wild storms. But this winter is
proving too much even for the hardiest of Newfoundlanders.
They're shivering and shoveling their way through the worst winter on
record – and they've been keeping records for 60 years. The Newfoundland
Weather Centre says 300 centimetres of snow have fallen on St. John's
since December, and none of it has melted.
All that snow is clogging the city's narrow streets, making it difficult
for snow plows to manoeuvre. Rock-hard snowbanks tower over pedestrians'
heads. And there's just nowhere to put all that snow. Another 15
centimetres fell on Wednesday, prompting the city's mayor to appeal for
help.
Andy Wells says he doesn't need the army – a reference to Toronto's
mayor
calling in the military to deal with a massive storm two years ago. But
Wells says he could use an army of snow blowers.
Wells is asking municipalities in eastern Canada to send any extra
heavy-duty snow-clearing machinery to St. John's. More snow is forecast
for the weekend.
