This most recent sub-zero cold snap brings welcomed precipitation, but
the extreme conditions are causing havoc.
The temperatures are being blamed for the deaths of at least 110
refugees in one night, at a camp in western Afghanistan, according to
the United Nations.
The victims were mostly children and the elderly, said Erick de Mul, the
U.N. humanitarian coordinator. They only had plastic sheets to keep them
warm, as temperatures fell to 13 below zero Monday night.
