One year ago Thur, a low pressure underwent bombogeneous off the N/S
Carolina coast, & plastered the mid Atlantic w/ a crippling snow fall
that was NOT in the forecast.
Although coastal regions of the Delmarva were to get a few inches, the
DC area was to get an inch or less, & we were to get a few SF's, per the
forecast at 5pm the night before.
As the NWS saw the potential for a storm, a winter storm watch was
issued east of the Blue Ridge, & winter weather advisory westward, at
8pm. Because the snow had been in the forecast until now, TV stations
repeatedly scrolled the info.
AS the storm exploded, the snow line marched west & north... rapidly.
The 4am forecast had us getting 1-2", a 60% pop. At 5am, heavy snow
began falling here, and continued 5 more hours. Light snow continued
into the afternoon.
A winter storm warning was finally issued for us at 7am, with a forecast
of 6".
Snowfall amounts greatly varied. No measurable snow was recorded in the
NW part of my county, 18 miles away, while 18 miles to my east, in the
area of US 50/17 intersection, a foot was reported!

It was the biggest flub of local forecasters in 2000.
