[STORMREPORTS] Snow In WNC

Reports are coming in on the scanner of 4 to 8 inches of new snow here in
the high country of Western North Carolina....(Forecast was for one to
three) I received just over 5 inches of very wet snow at my
location.....Shows what a difference a day can make...Our high yesterday was
almost 49 with sunny skies...today moderate snow with temp near 32...I had
to travel to Hickory NC this morning and encountered several accidents
(Minor Injuries) but a major inconvenience...All three main roads were
blocked by tractor trailers..Highway 221 was blocked for several hours,
highway 194 blocked for about an hour and highway 321 blocked for over an
hour.

This is what happens here....one mile down the mountain in all directions
roads are clear with only rain.....people and truckers coming up into the
mountains have no idea that the roads are covered with snow and are not
prepared for travel on snow covered roads and there is rarely a place to
turn around so they try to continue on and either slide off the road, jack
knife their trucks or just stop in the road and hold up traffic...

When I left Hickory to return to Boone around 10 am...sun was bright and the
sky was blue with no hint of snow....When I got close to Blowing Rock roads
were snow covered and snow tires, chains, or 4X4 was required. Locations
less that 20 miles away had temperatures in the mid 40's with only light
rain or mist. The only official stations the high country KGEV in Jefferson
(Ashe County) http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KGEV.html was
reporting light snow from 3 AM until 9 AM, (KTNB) Boone NC is not yet
listed on the NWS Drop down list of North Carolina but can be accessed at
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KTNB.html listed light snow
beginning at 3 AM also.

Good reason to check the weather forecast and conditions at your destination
if heading into the mountains....
