Valid Friday, January 5, 2001 - Tuesday, January 16, 2001.
Summary of Forecasts & Threats
SYNOPSIS: Early in the period cold conditions are likely to continue in the
Northeast, with a couple
of chances for snow storms for the Northeast during the first half of
January, although it is too early
to forecast the details. Lake effect snows are likely to occur around the
Great Lakes from January 5
through 8. However the models are suggesting that by the middle of the month
a pattern change may
occur which will shift the mean pattern to one with cooler temperatures in
the West and warmer in
the East than has been the general case for the last month.
THREATS
Drought continues across much of the Florida peninsula during this
assessment period.
A strong storm with high winds is expected to affect much of Alaska on
Saturday, Jan 6 and
Sunday, Jan 7.
DETAILED SUMMARY
For Friday January 5 through Sunday January 7: A strong storm, with high
winds, is forecast by
several models for Alaska for Saturday, Jan 6 and Sunday, Jan 7. The
Northeast should continue to
see wintery temperatures, and lake effect snows are likely around the Great
Lakes.
For Monday January 8 through January 16: Temperatures are indicated to
moderate in the East
while becoming somewhat cooler in the West as there is a mean pattern shift
forecast by most
models.
