Winchester (nw) VA
Hello everyone,
I got back from a trip in Lancaster Co. PA to see my family for
Christmas, and got back Monday.
In PA, were expecting a 6-12" snowfall, and like many inland areas, had
none. However we missed accumulating snow by only 35 miles, and a
dusting of snow about 20 miles away. At the same time, we were sunny.
I had promised the snow too, as did each & every forecaster i heard. My
sister & her family was the most excited since they are from N GA. The
most it has snowed in the last decade where they live was several inches
from the March '93 Superstorm.
On the way back from the airport, by 13 year old niece had noticed the
white powder on the side of the road. She thought it was snow, she had
never seen excess road salt. She also never had seen the grime on cars
created when they traveled on slushy roads.
On TV, we watched the Philadelphia news coverage of snow removal. She
was amazed at the double bladed and v-shaped plows and plow trains. Most
Philadelphia tv stations suspended programming to cover the storm.
The most amazing aspect of the storm, other than it was way overblown,
was at Veterans Field in Philadelphia. There they covered the entire
field with tarp on Friday, & heated it. They also set up chutes from the
seats into the field below. At ground level, the snow piles from above
were placed in snow melters, & the water ran into drains. (The snow
from the seating area was removed to prevent snowballs from landing at
field level, which happened at a NY Giants game several years ago.)
I created a Photopoint album, a mix of weather and scenic shots. (No
family shots though, at the request of a few members.)

On Saturday AM, this story greeted readers, One problem: Only a light
dusting or flurries fell in eastern sections of the county, & that was
mid afternoon.

I found this page on the Philly NWS website. Not sure if it has run on
the lists, since i was on "no mail" during my absence, and i have not
read the message boards at eGroups yet.

While i was away (Thur 12/28/00 to Mon 1/01/01), my wx station recorded
a max temp of 33.4 at 2:55pm Mon, a low temp of 12.2, at 7:41am Fri; a
PWG of 33mph & low windchill of -15 at 6:05am of Thur. Very light
dustings of snow fell before dawn Thur, and late Sat am. A few flurries
also fell midday Sunday.
And when my sister's family arrived back in GA Monday evening, they
found out they missed out on the season's 3rd snowfall (there) of about
1/4" about 12 hours earlier.
Happy New Year Everyone,
Steve Minghini
