Well 2000 has come and gone.....and just to up date December 2000 in the
high country of WNC....December 2000 was the third coldest on record Dec
1969 and December 1989 where just slightly colder....Average temp here was
26.4 degrees another station located in Boone reports 26.7 average
temp.....Snowfall has generally been light with only about 8 inches on
average for the month however some of the ski slopes...South & West of here
reported more snow...Beech Mountain 25 inches for December....It has snowed
practically every day since December 19th....Mostly light snow
showers......It is snowing lightly today with about 1.5 inches on the
ground......Have not seen completely bare ground since December 17th.
Cold and wind has been the story of December 2000...many days had peek wind
chills in the -40 to -50 degree range with wind gusts in the 40 -50 mph
range common.
