Subject: satellite imagery of blowing snow event in Iowa

Satellite enthusiasts;

I have posted a quick-and-dirty Web page showing GOES-8 and
NOAA-14 polar orbiter imagery from the ground blizzard event
across Iowa this past Thursday (21 December):

  http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/001221.html

Thanks to those who answered my plea for "ground-truth" photos --
I received a photo from the KIMT-TV (Mason City, IA) towercam as
one of the blowing snow bands was close to the city; another
image from Des Moines IA shows the brilliant display of sun dogs
due to refraction of light by the extensive plate-shaped blowing
snow crystals suspended within the boundary layer.

Early in the day on 21 December, much of northern IA was under
a Winter Weather Advisory for the cold temperatures, dangerous
wind chills, and blowing snow. As it became more obvious as to
just how bad conditions were deteriorating during the morning,
that area was upgraded to a Blizzard Warning; snow plows were
called off the roads, as drifting snow and abandoned vehicles
were making the road clearing efforts rather futile.

I have much more work to do on this page, and more imagery and
products to add, but I wanted to get this out for folks to
"enjoy". I had hoped to show some 0.25 km resolution imagery
from the NASA TERRA MODIS instrument, but navigation problems
with our direct readout data need to be corrected. At any rate,
drive safely everyone, and if you see this banding signature
on satellite, well, don't drive there... :-)
