NOTE: The Internet outage affecting CASI HQ continues, so I can't
promise that I will be too prompt in posting or approving posts
tonight and tomorrow.
This is a potentially dangerous winter situation setting up for the
carolinas. I would urge Members to report any heavy snow
accumulations to the StormReports list, stormreports{at}casi-internal, and
to send pictures to me at j{at}weatherwatchers.org. If you cannot reach
the stormreports group you can email me.
Without getting too much into the model forecasts for this storm
(since that belongs on our WX-FORECAST list) I would like to note
that I saw a couple of alarming things while looking over forecasts
today.
The ETA, which may well be overdoing it, is calling for 27" of snow
in Raleigh over the next 48 hours, with 10-15" during a 6-hour period
overnight. Whether it's wrong or right, it's worth preparing for
this storm if the models even THINK that there will be that much snow.
Now, NWS forecasts aren't that high, but they are very high for
eastern NC, for this time of year.
For my mom in Wilkes county in the northern foothills, the NWS is
calling for 5-10". For Raleigh, where CASI HQ used to be located,
they are calling for 10-12"+.
I looked at forecasts from the various models and weather providers
this morning and all showed at least 6" for some part of north
carolina, though amounts varied greatly.
>From Chris, CASI-South Leader:
Here is our area forecast discussion for this evening, Currently our
winds are gusting from 5-10mph out of the East. We are also
receiving some rainfall already. We just had a gust of 25mph here
at CASI-South HQ
EXPECT MOST OF THE EVENT TO BE SNOW IN OUR WESTERN
COUNTIES...ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE MIXED WITH SOME RAIN FOR A SHORT TIME.
WILL ISSUE WINTER STORM WARNING THERE FOR 4 TO 7 INCHES TOTAL
ACCUMULATION THROUGH SUN. FOR THE TIER OF COUNTIES TO THE EAST...WILL
ISSUE A WINTER STORM ADVISORY. ALTHOUGH THERE WILL BE A BETTER CHANCE
OF MIXING WITH RAIN FOR A LONGER PERIOD...WILL CALL FOR 1 TO 3 INCHES
IN THESE COUNTIES...INCLUDING WESTERN PORTIONS OF ONSLOW COUNTY.
ALONG THE COAST WILL MENTION RAIN MIXING WITH SNOW AT TIMES...WITH
LITTLE OR NO ACCUMULATION.
