=> LANL Supercomputers Help Fire Behavior Research
NOVEMBER 22 -- LOS ALAMOS, NM: Supercomputers once used to design nuclear
weapons
are now being employed in efforts to preserve life and property - by
predicting fire behavior.
Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national laboratories,
according to a report
by the Environmental News Network, are developing real-time computer models
to forecast fire
behavior under a wide range of weather and terrain conditions. The results
are expected to benefit
not only firefighters - whether they are in training, preparing for a
prescribed fire, or battling flames
on the fireline - but also planners devising growth regulations for the
high-risk wildland/urban
interface.
"We're doing new science and exploring new ground, taking the sophisticated
technology of the
weapons program and using it in unconventional ways," says Mike Bradley,
coordinator of the effort
and senior atmospheric scientist at the lab in Livermore, California. "We
see the potential of our
National Wildfire Prediction Program, and we're very excited."
The state-of-the-science system combines technology from a
wildfire-simulation project at the Los
Alamos lab with the emergency response assets of the National Atmospheric
Release Advisory
Center and a regional weather-prediction model at Livermore. The system is
intended to help predict
fire behavior the way meteorologists forecast storms.
"It's these kinds of techniques that are needed to solve many of the
problems we've been witnessing
in the last couple of years," says Joe Rawitzer, director of operations at
Fire Spec Systems in
Monterey, California.
His group of veteran firefighters who specialize in prescribed fire will
take advantage of the new
technology next fall during a delicate operation at Fort Ord. They plan to
use prescribed fire on the
18,000 acres that was once a firing range - before the Army base in Monterey
was
decommissioned and turned over to the BLM for recreational use. Once the
land is cleared of brush,
crews will be able to check for any live munitions that may still lie buried
there.
"This technology, combined with knowledge gained from years of experience in
the field, will create
solutions acceptable to the public and can stop the loss of life and
property," says Rawitzer.
Researchers are using the supercomputers to model the complex interplay of
weather patterns,
terrain, and fire behavior to develop the world's most accurate and complete
real-time wildfire
simulator.
Dennis Rein, fire captain on the 100,000-acre East Bay Regional Parks
District in northern
California, has seen demonstrations of the system. "It's a giant leap that
will take a while to develop,"
he says, "but once this technology's been implemented, it will be the stuff
of Star Wars." The story's
online from the Environmental News Network.
