Subject: Thundersnow Update - Buffalo

November 20, 2000

Heavy Lake Effect snows are pounding portions of Western New York today.
Unofficial reports of 20" of snow have been received north of Buffalo,
New
York.

The city of Buffalo is experiencing snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per
hour...with lightning and thunder. The snow is being accompanied by
winds
in excess of 30 miles per hour. White-Out conditions have been reported
across Erie county.

This snow is on top of more than a foot of snow that fell over the
weekend.

The snowband is very narrow...no more than 20 miles wide. There have
been
numerous reports of tree limbs breaking under the weight of the heavy
wet
snow.

Snow is expected to continue across Buffalo this evening with several
more
inches expected before the snowband moves south of the city.

According to local news agencies this is the heaviest snow to fall in
Buffalo...this early...since 1979.

It looks like a White Thanksgiving for portions of New York State!

November 20, 2000

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo has broken its all time November snowfall record...and it did it
in
3 days!

The current snow event is the third largest snowfall in the history of
record keeping for Buffalo....

At 5 pm the NWS Office had 12 inches of snow reported and at 9 pm the
airport was reporting a storm event total of 24.5 inches. This is on
top of
the snow that fell over the weekend!

The Mayor has announced that he is asking for a State of Emergency to be
declared by the Governor of the state. The Mayor also states that the
city
of Buffalo is closed tomorrow.

News video is showing hundreds of cars abandoned on city streets. Plows
are
unable to clear roads because of the abandoned cars.

Children are staying in schools overnight because buses are unable to
get
them home.

News video is also showing numerous school buses with children on them
stuck
in the grid-lock. At 8 pm some of the buses continued to have children
on
them.

Numerous buildings have been opened in downtown Buffalo to shelter those
individuals who have abandoned their vehicles in the streets.

Fairly frequent lightning has been observed during the live shots. At
one
point you could hear the thunder rolling as the reporter was standing
out in
the snow.
